About this site

A free speed test with South African context, built because most speed test sites tell you a number and nothing about what it means here.

Why this exists

Every speed test site gives you download, upload and ping. None of them tell you whether 38 Mbps is fine on Rain 4G or a problem on Vumatel fibre, or whether the slow part is your WiFi, your ISP or the line. This site puts the test next to that context, written for the networks, packages and load-shedding realities of South Africa.

How the test works

The test runs in your browser using the OpenSpeedtest engine, which sends and receives data to measure download speed, upload speed and ping. Nothing is installed and no account is needed. The engine chooses the nearest available server automatically.

A result on WiFi reflects your WiFi. A result on an Ethernet cable reflects your line. We say this on every page because it is the single most common source of confusion.

Where the “normal speed” ranges come from

The ranges on the provider pages are drawn from published package speeds, provider fair-use terms, and real-world results reported by South African users across the major networks. They are indicative, not guarantees, and they are reviewed as networks change. If a range looks wrong for your area, tell us.

Independence

This site is not affiliated with any ISP, mobile network or fibre operator, and provider pages are not sponsored. The test engine is provided by OpenSpeedtest.
