Vumatel speed test

Check your Vumatel fibre line and see whether it delivers the symmetrical speed your package promises.

Vumatel lines are symmetrical: upload should be close to download. On a cable, both should sit within about 10% of your package. Test on WiFi afterwards to see the difference.

What speed is normal on Vumatel?

Vumatel is a fibre network operator, not an ISP. It owns the fibre in your street and the ONT on your wall, and you buy internet over it from an ISP such as Vodacom, Mweb, Afrihost, Vox or Cool Ideas. The line sets the ceiling; the ISP sets the package and handles your support.

Vumatel package (via your ISP)Typical downloadTypical pingGood for

100–200 Mbps symmetricalWithin about 10% of package, upload similar2–10 ms4K streaming, working from home, families

If your upload is far below your download on a Vumatel line, that usually points to your router or WiFi rather than the line.

Rule of thumb: under 80% of package on a cable at any hour is a fault. A dip only in the evening is ISP contention, not the Vumatel line.

Why your Vumatel speed is slow, and what to do about it

On Vumatel the question is always: is it the line, the ISP or my WiFi? These steps answer it.

  1. Test on a cable, not WiFiPlug a laptop into the router with an Ethernet cable and test again. If the cable result is much higher than WiFi, the problem is inside your home, not with your provider. Move closer to the router, switch to the 5 GHz WiFi band, or add a mesh unit.
  2. Read the ONT lightsThe Vumatel ONT shows a red or flashing LOS light when the line has lost signal. That is a Vumatel fault; your ISP logs it and Vumatel dispatches a technician. Green lights mean the line is up.
  3. Confirm the package with your ISPCheck your ISP account for the speed you are on. Line speed changes are applied by Vumatel on the ISP’s request and can take a day.
  4. Test at a quiet hour and at peakRun the test at 10 am and again at 8 pm. A big evening drop points to congestion on the network, not your setup. A steady shortfall at every hour points to the line or the plan.
  5. Restart the routerSwitch it off at the wall for 30 seconds. Routers that have been on for weeks leak memory, drop to slower WiFi modes and hold onto poor connections. Do this before anything else.
  6. Check the router handles the speedFor 500 Mbps and above you need a router with a gigabit WAN port and WiFi 6 or better to get close on wireless.
  7. Contact your ISP with your numbersIf daytime speeds on a cable are still far below your plan, log a ticket with your ISP, not Vumatel. Vumatel only accepts faults through the ISP. Send the download, upload and ping numbers, the time of day and whether you were on cable or WiFi. That gets you past the first-line “restart your router” reply.

Vumatel vs your ISP: who fixes what

Vumatel handles the physical line, the ONT and the connection to the ISP. Everything after that, including your package speed, routing and support, is the ISP. If your line is up but slow only at night, changing ISP on the same Vumatel line often solves it, and switching is quick because the line stays the same.

Load-shedding on Vumatel

The ONT and your router both need power. A small UPS or mini UPS keeps both running for several hours. Vumatel’s own network equipment has backup power, so the line itself normally stays up.

Common questions

Why is my Vumatel fibre slow?

Test on a cable. If the cable matches your package, WiFi is the limit. If not and the ONT is green, log a ticket with your ISP.

Should upload equal download on Vumatel?

Yes. Vumatel lines are symmetrical, so a large gap usually means your router or WiFi is the bottleneck.

Do I contact Vumatel or my ISP?

Always your ISP. Vumatel only takes fault reports from ISPs.

What does a red light on the Vumatel ONT mean?

Loss of signal on the fibre line. Your ISP logs it and Vumatel sends a technician.
