Rain speed test

Check your Rain 5G or 4G speed and see whether the result is normal for your plan, or a sign that something needs fixing.

Rain is a wireless network, so where your router sits matters more than anything else. Test once right next to the router, then again from where you normally use the internet.

What speed is normal on Rain?

Rain doesn’t run fibre. Everything they sell rides on their own 4G and 5G towers, so your speed is set by signal strength and how many people share your tower, not by a fixed line. Two neighbours on the same plan can get very different results.

Rain productTypical downloadTypical pingGood for
5G home (rainOne, 5G router)50–300 Mbps, higher near a tower15–40 ms4K streaming, working from home, families
4G unlimited, higher tier15–50 Mbps30–70 msHD streaming, video calls, browsing

Ranges reflect real-world daytime results from Rain users. Rain’s 4G plans are sold in speed tiers, so also compare your result against the tier you pay for.

Rule of thumb: a daytime result at 60–80% of what your plan promises is healthy for wireless. Consistently under 40% at every time of day points to signal or router placement, not the plan.

Why your Rain speed is slow, and what to do about it

Work through these in order. Most Rain speed complaints are fixed by the first three.

  1. Move the router to a windowRain’s signal has to reach your router from the tower. Walls, burglar bars and metal roofs all cut it down. Put the router on a windowsill on the side of the house facing the nearest tower, as high as you can, and rerun the test. This single change often doubles the result.
  2. Test on a cable, not WiFiPlug a laptop into the router with an Ethernet cable and test again. If the cable result is much higher than WiFi, the problem is inside your home, not with your provider. Move closer to the router, switch to the 5 GHz WiFi band, or add a mesh unit.
  3. Check the signal lightsRain routers show signal strength on the front or in the admin page. Two bars or fewer means the tower is too far or too obstructed for full speed, whatever you do indoors.
  4. Test at a quiet hour and at peakRun the test at 10 am and again at 8 pm. A big evening drop points to congestion on the network, not your setup. A steady shortfall at every hour points to the line or the plan.
  5. Restart the router and wait five minutesA restart forces the router to reconnect to the strongest available tower. Do this after moving it, and any time speed has been poor for hours.
  6. Check for load-shedding in your areaRain towers stay up on batteries during outages but get congested as the area loses power. A slow result during a stage 4 evening is expected; the same result at midday on a normal day is not.
  7. Contact Rain with your numbersIf daytime speeds on a cable are still far below your plan, contact Rain through the app or WhatsApp. Send the download, upload and ping numbers, the time of day and whether you were on cable or WiFi. That gets you past the first-line “restart your router” reply.

Rain 4G vs 5G: which result should you expect?

Rain’s 5G is only available where they have 5G towers, mostly in the larger metros. If your router shows a 4G connection on a 5G plan, you’re outside 5G coverage and will get 4G speeds regardless of the plan. Rain’s coverage map in their app shows which network your address is on.

5G ping is also noticeably lower, which matters more than raw download speed for video calls and online gaming. If you’re on 4G and calls stutter even at decent download speeds, look at your ping in the result above; anything over 70 ms will feel laggy.

Common questions

Why is my Rain 5G so slow?

The most common causes are weak signal from the tower, the router placed away from a window, evening congestion on a busy tower, and testing over WiFi instead of a cable. Work through the checklist above before contacting Rain.

What speed should I get on Rain 4G unlimited?

Rain’s 4G unlimited products are sold in speed tiers. A daytime result within roughly 60–80% of your tier is normal for wireless. If you’re consistently far below that at all hours, the issue is usually signal or router position.

Does Rain slow down at night?

Yes, like any wireless network. Speeds drop in the evening peak, usually 7 pm to 10 pm, because more people share your tower. Test at a quiet hour and at peak to see how big the gap is.

Does load-shedding affect Rain?

Yes. Towers run on battery backup and get congested when the area around them loses power, so speeds often drop during outages even if your own router is on a UPS.

Is Rain good enough for working from home?

Rain 5G is, if your signal is strong. Rain 4G on a higher tier handles video calls and browsing, but check your ping: under 50 ms is comfortable for calls, over 100 ms is not.
