Check your Vumatel fibre line and see whether it delivers the symmetrical speed your package promises.
Vumatel is a fibre network operator, not an ISP. It owns the fibre in your street and the ONT on your wall, and you buy internet over it from an ISP such as Vodacom, Mweb, Afrihost, Vox or Cool Ideas. The line sets the ceiling; the ISP sets the package and handles your support.
| Vumatel package (via your ISP) | Typical download | Typical ping | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20–50 Mbps symmetrical | Within about 10% of package, upload similar | 3–12 ms | Browsing, HD streaming, calls |
| 100–200 Mbps symmetrical | Within about 10% of package, upload similar | 2–10 ms | 4K streaming, working from home, families |
| 500 Mbps – 1 Gbps | 60–90% on a cable; most WiFi caps out below | 2–8 ms | Heavy downloads, many devices |
| Vumatel Reach / Key (prepaid) | Within about 10% of the chosen speed | 3–12 ms | Browsing, streaming |
If your upload is far below your download on a Vumatel line, that usually points to your router or WiFi rather than the line.
Rule of thumb: under 80% of package on a cable at any hour is a fault. A dip only in the evening is ISP contention, not the Vumatel line.
On Vumatel the question is always: is it the line, the ISP or my WiFi? These steps answer it.
Vumatel handles the physical line, the ONT and the connection to the ISP. Everything after that, including your package speed, routing and support, is the ISP. If your line is up but slow only at night, changing ISP on the same Vumatel line often solves it, and switching is quick because the line stays the same.
The ONT and your router both need power. A small UPS or mini UPS keeps both running for several hours. Vumatel’s own network equipment has backup power, so the line itself normally stays up.
Test on a cable. If the cable matches your package, WiFi is the limit. If not and the ONT is green, log a ticket with your ISP.
Yes. Vumatel lines are symmetrical, so a large gap usually means your router or WiFi is the bottleneck.
Always your ISP. Vumatel only takes fault reports from ISPs.
Loss of signal on the fibre line. Your ISP logs it and Vumatel sends a technician.
