Mweb speed test

Check your Mweb fibre or LTE speed and see whether you’re getting the package you pay for.

Mweb fibre runs over whichever fibre network serves your street, so the result should sit close to your package on a cable. If it does, the slow part is WiFi.

What speed is normal on Mweb?

Mweb is an internet service provider, not a network builder. Your Mweb fibre is delivered over a fibre network operator such as Openserve, Vumatel, Frogfoot or Octotel, and Mweb LTE runs on a partner mobile network. That matters because the speed ceiling is set by the network and package, while evening slowdowns usually come from the ISP’s capacity.

Mweb packageTypical downloadTypical pingGood for
Fibre 20–50 MbpsWithin about 10% of package3–15 msBrowsing, HD streaming, calls
Fibre 100–200 MbpsWithin about 10% of package3–12 ms4K streaming, working from home, families
Fibre 500 Mbps – 1 GbpsOften 60–90% of package; most WiFi cannot reach it2–10 msHeavy downloads, many devices
Mweb LTE10–50 Mbps30–70 msBrowsing, HD streaming

Gigabit packages need a router with a gigabit WAN port and a wired connection to see full speed; on WiFi most devices top out well below 500 Mbps.

Rule of thumb: fibre under 80% of the package on a cable, at any hour, is worth a support ticket. A drop only between 7 pm and 10 pm is contention and worth reporting if it happens every night.

Why your Mweb speed is slow, and what to do about it

Mweb fibre problems split into three places: your WiFi, the fibre line, and Mweb itself. These steps tell you which one it is.

  1. Test on a cable, not WiFiPlug a laptop into the router with an Ethernet cable and test again. If the cable result is much higher than WiFi, the problem is inside your home, not with your provider. Move closer to the router, switch to the 5 GHz WiFi band, or add a mesh unit.
  2. Check the ONT lightsThe small box the fibre enters is the ONT. A red or flashing LOS light means the line is down and the fibre network needs to fix it; Mweb logs that for you. Green lights with slow speed mean the line is fine.
  3. Confirm your package speedLog into the Mweb customer zone and check the package you are actually on. Upgrades sometimes take a day to apply, and lines are occasionally provisioned at the wrong speed.
  4. Test at a quiet hour and at peakRun the test at 10 am and again at 8 pm. A big evening drop points to congestion on the network, not your setup. A steady shortfall at every hour points to the line or the plan.
  5. Restart the routerSwitch it off at the wall for 30 seconds. Routers that have been on for weeks leak memory, drop to slower WiFi modes and hold onto poor connections. Do this before anything else.
  6. Check the router can handle the speedOlder routers have 100 Mbps WAN ports and older WiFi. If you upgraded your package and the result barely changed, the router is the ceiling.
  7. Contact Mweb with your numbersIf daytime speeds on a cable are still far below your plan, log a ticket in the customer zone, use the app or WhatsApp. Send the download, upload and ping numbers, the time of day and whether you were on cable or WiFi. That gets you past the first-line “restart your router” reply.

Which fibre network is behind your Mweb line?

Your ONT usually carries the network operator’s sticker, and your Mweb account shows it too. Vumatel and Frogfoot lines are typically symmetrical (upload equals download); Openserve lines often have lower upload than download. That is worth knowing before you worry about a low upload figure.

Load-shedding and Mweb

Fibre keeps running through load-shedding if your ONT and router have backup power. A small UPS or a fibre-specific mini UPS will run both for hours. LTE customers may see slower speeds during outages as towers become congested.

Common questions

Why is my Mweb fibre slow at night?

Evening slowdowns on a line that is fine during the day are usually ISP contention. If it happens every night, log it with Mweb with your test results at both times.

What speed should I get on Mweb fibre?

Within about 10% of your package on a cable. WiFi results will be lower, especially on packages above 200 Mbps.

Is my Mweb line Openserve or Vumatel?

Check the sticker on your ONT or your Mweb account. It affects whether your upload should match your download.

How do I log a fault with Mweb?

Through the customer zone, the Mweb app or WhatsApp. Include your test results and whether the ONT lights are normal.
