Vox speed test

Check your Vox fibre or LTE speed against the package you pay for, and find out where the slowdown is.

Vox fibre runs over the fibre network on your street, so on a cable the result should sit close to your package. Test on WiFi afterwards to see how much your router costs you.

What speed is normal on Vox?

Vox is an ISP that delivers fibre over operators such as Openserve, Vumatel, Frogfoot, Octotel and MetroFibre, along with fixed LTE. The network sets the ceiling and the package sets the target; Vox controls what happens to your traffic after it leaves the network.

Vox productTypical downloadTypical pingGood for
Fibre 20–50 MbpsWithin about 10% of package3–15 msBrowsing, HD streaming, calls
Fibre 100–200 MbpsWithin about 10% of package3–12 ms4K streaming, working from home
Fibre 500 Mbps – 1 Gbps60–90% of package on a cable; far less on WiFi2–10 msHeavy downloads, many devices
Vox fixed LTE10–50 Mbps30–70 msBrowsing, HD streaming

Symmetrical packages (same upload and download) are common on Vumatel and Frogfoot lines; Openserve lines usually have lower upload.

Rule of thumb: under 80% of package on a cable, at any hour, is a ticket. A dip only in the evening is contention, and worth reporting if it repeats every night.

Why your Vox speed is slow, and what to do about it

Work through these to find out whether the problem is your WiFi, the line or the ISP.

  1. Test on a cable, not WiFiPlug a laptop into the router with an Ethernet cable and test again. If the cable result is much higher than WiFi, the problem is inside your home, not with your provider. Move closer to the router, switch to the 5 GHz WiFi band, or add a mesh unit.
  2. Read the ONT lightsA red LOS light on the ONT means the fibre line is down; Vox logs that with the network operator. Green lights with slow speed mean the line is up.
  3. Confirm your packageCheck the Vox customer portal for the speed you are actually on. Provisioning errors and pending upgrades are more common than people expect.
  4. Test at a quiet hour and at peakRun the test at 10 am and again at 8 pm. A big evening drop points to congestion on the network, not your setup. A steady shortfall at every hour points to the line or the plan.
  5. Restart the routerSwitch it off at the wall for 30 seconds. Routers that have been on for weeks leak memory, drop to slower WiFi modes and hold onto poor connections. Do this before anything else.
  6. Check the routerRouters with 100 Mbps WAN ports or old WiFi standards cap your speed. If an upgrade made no difference, the router is the limit.
  7. Contact Vox with your numbersIf daytime speeds on a cable are still far below your plan, log a ticket in the customer portal or call Vox support. Send the download, upload and ping numbers, the time of day and whether you were on cable or WiFi. That gets you past the first-line “restart your router” reply.

Vox and the fibre operator: who fixes what

The operator owns the fibre and the ONT; Vox owns the service. A line fault is escalated by Vox to the operator and can take longer to resolve than an ISP-side issue, so it helps to know from the ONT lights which one you are dealing with.

Load-shedding

Fibre keeps working through load-shedding if the ONT and router are on backup power. A mini UPS is the cheapest fix. Vox LTE customers may see slower speeds during outages as towers become congested.

Common questions

Why is my Vox fibre slow?

Test on a cable first. If it matches the package, the issue is WiFi. If not and the ONT is green, log a ticket with your results.

What speed should Vox fibre give me?

Within about 10% of your package on a cable. WiFi results will be lower, especially above 200 Mbps.

What does a red light on my ONT mean?

A red LOS light means the fibre line has lost signal. Contact Vox so they can log it with the network operator.

How do I contact Vox support?

Through the customer portal or the Vox support line. Include your test results and time of day.
